I just purchased a 97 Explorer and would like to add a CD changer. The radio has all of the CD functions on it, however I am not sure which changer to purchase. Ebay is full of different styles of Ford CD changers.
1. How do I know what will be compatible with my radio
2. How does the changer connect to the radio?
I pulled the radio out, looked at the back and found no empty ports so I am confused as to how the changer connects to the radio.
they (aftermarket) usually run off a FM converter that uses a dedicated FM station to play the CDs. never used on personally but i do know they make them for add ons to factory systems. it also comes with its own little remote.
as for stock Cd changers i have no idea, my mom had one in her old 98 taurus and it used a IP bux connector i think (cant remember the name) they connected to the back of the radio.
Please tell me you didn't get FM modulated before you looked in to the possibility of adding a great aftermarket (Alpine or Sony or a couple of others) to your factory head. It may be possible to add the changer using an interface adapter by Soundgate or Peripheral. You will have great sound quality and factory control. Both have web sites with the name of a dealer near you.
I have the same Explorer as you and I installed the factory 6 disc changer in the center console storage compartment. I found the changer, that had been installed by the factory, at a local recycle store (junkyard) including the cartridge - $90.00. I had to buy the add-on wiring harness from a Ford dealer - $85.00. Installation was pretty straight forward and all functions work like a charm. I hope this helps...
