I have a '53F100 and I am wanting a 5 speed manual transmission in it. I have a 351W that will be rebuilt and will most likely include a nice cam to give it a lopey idle and aluminum intake with fast EFI on top. Other than those mods it will be a stock engine.
Will a T5 5 speed out of a v8 mustang hold up with this engine? Anyone else have this combo?
From what I have read, I need to look for a T5 out of a 90 or newer v8 mustang and then find a T5 tailshaft out of a S10 pickup which has the forward shifter location. Do I have that part correct?
I'm going with the ZF S5-42 that Rick mentioned in my truck. But... I'm going to use it like the 3/4 ton truck that it is and it needs a real truck transmission. The ZF unit has a creeper 1st gear and it shifts like a truck tranny - the gates are notchy and it will not play nice if you even think about trying to shift it aggressively. In my opinion, it's not what you want in a truck that will be a mild performance-oriented cruiser. A good World Class T5 should stand up to your mild 351 just fine and I think it'll be a lot more fun to drive.

I'm not meaning to brag or anything like that but I likely have more "performance" driving experience with the truck 5 speed than most. I drove one every third day for 16 years. We drove it like someone's life depended on it because a lot of the time it did. I could shift it up and down pretty dang fast. Yeah it's got long throws but once you know it.....you can go to town.

I'm at that current stage, and there are so many choices??? Did you figure it out?? HELP
I have not gotten much done on my truck in the last 6 months. I am going with the 351w and World Class T-5 out of a Mustang. I have obtained two of the T-5's so I will have a spare if I should have any issues with the primary.
I sure hope to get back working on my truck soon but currently knee issues are really slowing me down!!

I'm looking at a lot of posts, looks like we need to use an S 10 tailpiece which moves the shifter forward, if your using a bench. There are several utube videos on how to identify isdues, and move the shifter. Let's keep in touch!!
As noted above, the WC T5 will do you just fine. I've used those in a few builds, including a Frankenstein rally build with a highly boosted Volvo engine mated to a WC T5, ford driveshaft into a stock Volvo rear axle. The transmission took whatever I threw at it in really tough driving conditions. And the gear ration in the WC is much better than the standard issue T5 (particularly in 3rd gear).

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you asking "if" or "how" it mounts to the driveshaft of a stock vintage Ford truck? If so, that I don't know.
I have seen some pics on here of a t-5 that was used from a mustang with the mustang tailpiece. The floor had to be cut as the shifter comes up through the floor farther back than the opening but it still came up in front of where the bench seat would be. Right now that is the plan I am going with. If you use the s10 tailshaft, there are other issues with the speedometer gear. Those issues can be solved but I I think it will be fine with the mustang tailshaft.
