Luckily the building i work out of is on a back up generator. And the repeater site for our campus is also on a back up generator. We can also switch to a secondary repeater which is on a generator as well. If those fail we can use a talk around channel. Not as much range but it gets the job done.

We covered 950 sq miles and had all kinds of things happen over the years. Generator wouldn't start, tower site down phone lines down, and about any combo of them plus some more. Throw in that it is a mountainous area didn't help.

I know how it can be Rod. We have a few spots that suck for radio coverage on a good day. Mainly due to terrain.

I have some areas that dip low enough that if your using a handheld radio you will never get out. It doesnt have enough power. You have to use a vehicle radio.

Being mountainous we had several areas with poor propagation with mobile and HTs and we were still using 155 and 156 freq. It is a little worse now that we switched to IRP digital trunked in high UHF.
