I wouldn't buy a truck without it unless the dealer would add one. I have seen the AMP steps on other trucks and it just wouldn't fit the bill for me. When loading my dirt bike in the bed the step is a lifesaver! I honestly wouldn't even consider another manufacturer because they don't offer this option and I wouldn't buy another Ford truck without it either.
Like super duty 532 says. Just get the amp step. I have an 18 on order and opted out on the factory step. The amp step is more convenient. Just a quick flip and the step is lowered or raised. Have had one one my 05 GMC 2500 for years and love it .
How is the amp step getting down? do you use it? easy to use?
Perhaps you are well aware but your new truck will be, I don't know, ~ 2 foot higher? (assuming stock)
From a safety perspective the more important part is getting down. IMO jumping off the bed for most 40+ yearolds simply isn't an option with 17+ 4x4 super dutys.
Getting down I have no problem with the amp I’m 6’2” and still in decent shape . Yea I know the new truck will be higher I guess I will wait and see if i have regrets not ordering it. Also I only put bicycles or my 2 piece 5 th wheel hitch in the bed.
maybe someone hear how has one can give you their opinion how it works for them
I came out of a 2016 Platinum F150 that had it. My 250 now does not. Out of all the things my Platinum had Vs. this truck this almost tops the list for things missed. I'm in and out often in the back of my truck. I might look into the amp step.
I had the AMP step in a 2013 F150, and now put one in my 2017 F250. While the new truck is a little higher than the old, the step still works well. One added benefit of the AMP step is that you approach the tailgate from the side rather than from the back. When my camper is hooked up and the tailgate down, the factory step wouldn't work. This one does.
Just do it and figure it out later. I'm sure you could buy a different tailgate from a wrecked truck and swap them out, sell your old and still not break the bank.
That being said I use mine almost every time I need to get or put something in the bed. I'm 6'0 and under 30, but it would suck not to have it..
Having owned lifted trucks for the last 15 years I have found that using the tire and going over the side rail easiest for getting in and out of the bed.
IMHO if you want it so much I would just get a truck with it from factory.
This. It's so easy to order one of these trucks there is no reason not to get exactly what you want, options, gears, colors, etc. Better to be patient and get perfection than to buy some random config that happens to be on a dealer's lot.
It is No longer possible to convert the non step tailgate to the stepped varity. The two are physically different. You must swap the entire tailgate. The cost is approx $3500.00, depending on trim level.
If you have a truck accessory installer in your area that handles flat beds, and the like, they may have a take off from an install you could pick up cheaper.
Just write it into the deal for the truck, it’s all internal parts to the tailgate, if the dealer wants the sale? I am on through my second winter, dam thing saves your back getting in and out, loading matierials, bikes, firewood. I wouldn’t be without one either. My 2005 didn’t have it, 17 does and it is very functional. I didn’t hurt my back jumping out of the 17 once last firewood or camping season.

I looked the ordering route, but they are replacing my 2016 for a recurring problem they can't fix. So, if I order, I'll be out of a truck for months, which I don't want. They are saying August or so before I get it if I order now. They are working with me and doing more than lemon law would, so I can't complain too much. Just ready to get through this and stop driving this F150 loaner I've been in for over a month.
While I'm asking questions, do any of you regret getting the Lariat Ultimate Package with the push button tailgate and the push button start? I really don't want those features, but they seem to be on more trucks than those that have a real key and a true tailgate handle. If I go with the Lariat Value Package, what other things do I lose from the Ultimate Package? The website isn't too clear on the differences.
No regrets here on not getting the ultimate. They tailgate weight is assisted with or without the electric release, you can close it with one finger.
When I ordered my 18, I got the Value pkg then got the couple of other things I wanted.
Some have had issues with the tailgate coming down (electric release) on the 17+ while moving. Do some research here. If you tow and it comes down, there is big potential for trailer/tailgate damage.
I have the Value package, manual tailgate, key start, remote start. I don't miss the push-button start. Underlined below are the advertised differences, I didn't pay for a couple of them but have them anyway so I didn't underline them.
Ultimate (no sunroof starting in 2018 in this pkg)
This package of features adds numerous features to what is already a well-equipped truck: LED box lighting including LED center high-mounted stop lamp, power-adjustable pedals with memory, easy entry/exit memory driver’s seat feature, power heated/cooled driver/passenger seat with driver side memory, Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start, power telescoping/tilt steering wheel/column with heat, memory and audio controls, PowerScope® trailer tow mirrors with memory, Remote Start System, remote tailgate release, tailgate step, and voice-activated Navigation System with HD and SiriusXM® Satellite Radio.
Value Pkg
Add value to your Super Duty® LARIAT with these features: easy entry/exit memory driver’s seat, LED box lighting (including center high-mount stop lamp), power-adjustable pedals with memory, power heated/cooled driver and passenger seats with driver’s side memory, PowerScope® trailer tow mirrors with memory, and Remote Start System.
I did not pay for drivers memory settings, or the easy entry/exit. My truck came with these without costing extra.
I did pay for step, nav.
I am 6'3, 200+lbs and in good shape at 52+. I would NOT consider getting one without the step. Also the push button start is a no brainer. I am so done with keys and fumbling around for them.
