Can anyone tell me if it's worth it to me to switch out my 5-sp on on my '92 F350 w/ 7.3 diesel for an auto trans? i love my truck, in great shape runs great, but i have a bad back and the heavy truck clutch bothers me. what would this switch entail, aside from finding a trans and steering column/linkage?
I'm a Ford noob, but generally, you just need a flex plate to replace your flywheel, a torque converter, a transmission, and perhaps have your driveshaft re-worked. You need to run some cooling lines to the radiator (you need a radiator with a cooler in it, so you might need a new radiator). If you have a 4x4, then you may have to sort out the transfer case mating. Then you have to sort out the computer items. I'm not familiar with Ford to know how the electronics run. If you were to swap in a non-electronic computer, the swap is much easier, as you then only need worry about any sensors the engine may require. ...can't think of any off-hand, but I'm much more familiar with GM electronics (which doesn't mean I know a lot about them either). There are probably companies where you can buy any necessary wiring you might need.
I just saw a 1992 F-350 diesel. I don't know what kind of tranny it has, but I'd be interested in a swap to a manual if I purchase the truck.
is the truck you are looking at a 4 X 4? mine is and would like to make things as easy at possible for a swap. i may be interested in this..i've got another guy looking for me now too.
The truck is a 4x4. I still haven't had time to go look at it to know much more about it. The guy wants $12,500 for it, which I think is quite steep for a '92. How far are you from Utah? ...probably a thousand miles, right?
My original plan may still be best, which is to install a 502 in my old Suburban.
...not that I'm flaky. ...just poor, and I just spent $1200 fixing the AC in the Burban.
$12,500 is steep for a '92, if i was to sell mine i'd probably get $9000 or so. anyway, i am a long way from UTAH (michigan). also, i've decided that it's not worth the cost to swap out the tranny so i will stick with my manual. good luck with your vehicle search.
From a purely pain in the rear point of view. It would probably be easier to fix your back problems than to change the tranny out.
I used to have a bad back too. Even though I am young. ( It's not the age, it's the mileage and the wrecks that get you.) It took me 3 years of stretching exercises and weight training, but now I don't have the pain I used to.
