Hello. My son needs to replace the 3:73 geared rear differential in his 2002 F250 7.3L truck. Here is my quick question, will a 3:73 geared rear differential from a 2003 E350 Van fit in his 2002 F250? The 2002 is, I believe a 10.5 inch Sterling. Not sure what the rear is in the E350 other than I have been told it has 3:73 gears, leaf springs, and disc brakes. Hopefully the seller will send me pictures tonight. Are the dimensions, spring perch width, length, etc., correct for my sons F250? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jim
I believe the vans use a Dana 70 so no it will not work the F250 and F350 SRW use the Ford 10.5. Any 3.73 geared axle from a 99-04 F250 or F350 SRW will work.
If the spring perch width and wms width are the same I'd run it. You'll need to check the driveshaft length and u-joint size to make sure it'll bolt up though. I don't have a clue.
The Dana 70 likely wouldn't fit without some modifications and it is not as strong, more difficult to work on, and more expensive to get parts for than a Sterling.
Think I found a suitable replacement rear diff at a local yard today. Got it home and noticed that the rear u-joint pinion yoke is different. Our truck has a round flat flange that bolts to the pinion and the junkyard rear has a standard rear u-joint yoke. Does anyone know if the round flange will bolt onto the pinion of my junkyard rear? I plan to tear into it tomorrow but was curious if anyone knew about these different yokes. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Jim
You'll need a new crush sleeve, seal, and pinion nut. You'll also need a I ch pund torque wrench to check the preload before and after the swap. After must match the before torque setting
Use a new pinion nut and don’t over torque it or you could have to install another crush sleeve to get the preload perfect. I made that mistake the last time I replaced pinion and carrier bearings and had to get new nut and crush sleeve.
