Any Recommendations on the temp of the thermostat to run in a 95 F250 HD PS? My current one seems to cause the temp to move up and down in the gauge reading based on whether I am climbing a hill or not. It stays in the normal range (the "R" to the "M") but I like it to run cooler rather than warmer. What are the benefits/downsides to running a warmer/cooler temp thermostat?
I hate to say the obvious but if you are climbing a hill you are generating more heat and this the guage will read hotter. Downhill is less work and it runs cooler.
That being said you may just need to replace one that is sticking and causing fluctuations. Other threads have said that you should go with a hotter thermostat up around 203 I think.
The downside to running cooler was that if the engine runs too cool it does not completely burn the fuel and in cold climates this may condense on the cylinder walls leading to premature failure.
I also have a '95, and when I first got my truck, the temp gauge used to rise and fall like yours does. I investigated, and found that the '95's were designed to run a 203* thermostat. When I put one in, I found that the one I was replacing was a 185*, and now my temp gauge doesn't fluctuate nearly as much.
My opinion: If the truck was designed for a 203* thermostat, it's likely that some of the sensors won't operate properly if the temp never gets that high because of a lower rated thermostat.
We just finished the hottest summer on record in the Seattle area, and my truck has towed over the Cascades in 90* heat, and the thermostat doesn't fluctuate enough to hardly notice. I'd go with a 203*.
As a footnote Quad - I used to live in Seattle, Federal Way to be specific. Bought my truck out there. Now I live back east in the rustbelt.Mytrk hates it as much as I do. I think I have to replace the oil pan because it is rusted - big job to do?? I just replaced my fuel lines into the motor due rust and a resulting fuel leak! Guess you can't add word into already written stuff without messing the previous words up...see trk for "truck"
