i figured out the other day that when i slowly release the clutch without even touching the gas, i will go forward at about 5 mph. i have a granny first gear, so i start in second, so this is for second gear...i haven't tried it in first gear. this also works for reverse. what is this? do i need to fix my fuel injection? what is this doing to my mileage? any help is appreciated. thanx.
Is this gas or diesel? Which engine? What year model?
On my '99 SD V10 I assume that the PCM "feels" the truck under load and adjusts accordingly. Sometimes when I have the A/C off and coasting it will idle down a little more, but only when it gets under 12 MPH.
Jason,
Has it never done this before? My oldest son used to have a '97 w/460 and his did it from day 1. I think it has something to do with the Idle Air Control Valve, but the PCM takes over after that and dispenses the gas to the injectors. I think (if I'm following you right) that it is compensating for the "lug" of the engine versus RPM's. Hopefully someone can jump in that knows more about it or at least can explain it better.
i honestly don't know if its done it from day one. i bought it about a year and a half ago with 55,000. so if you say it's compensating for the lug, wouldn't that mean it should do it when i start it in 2nd, but not if i do it in first, or when i do it in reverse?
Not necesserily - it could be either/or.
What is the idle rpm's?
When you let off the clutch does it instantly begin to accelerate or does it begin to accelerate after you start moving - say about 10 feet or so?
The reason I'm asking is that I am trying to understand the problem more. To me what is happening is normal, but if it has just started doing it, there could be a potential problem, like in the IAC or EGR.
i don't have a tach yet, so i have no idea what it idles at. it doesn't start moving then start accelerate. i am at a complete stand still on level ground. the engine is running with it in second gear, and my foot has the clutch to the floor...so i'm just sitting there in neutral. i slowly (it only works if i go slowly) release my foot from the clutch and i will accelerate to about 5 mph and maintain that speed with my foot off the clutch without ever touching the gas. but if i release the clutch too quickly, it stalls...as i thought it should always do when you release the clutch with no gas.
i don't think you have a problem at all, then again i could be wrong. If I let my foot off the clutch slowly on my truck without giving it gas in second gear it will go too. Won't go fast, but it will creep.
This is perfectly normal. No engine is designed to stall when you let the clutch out without giving it any gas. As long as you let the clutch out slowly enough so that you don't stall the engine, the vehicle will act just as you describe.
This is easier to do with a larger engine like yours as it produces more power, even at idle.
