Just looked at the posting on battery location. All the ideas seem worth exploring. Now for my post!!! Need opinions on the best type of electrics. Bear claw or the current dove tails with poppers. I've heard that at the least, the 35 pounders should be used. Let me have it guys. This ol' man needs all the help he can get. Been too many years since I've built a rod.
If you are going to use the truck in the winter, you may want to go with 50 to 60 pound poppers. A frozen door is tough to open, unless you have a second way in.
I used 72 Maverick door latches on my 56 f100 I wanted to use the stock interior door handles plus I didn't want to cut a notch in my door for the bear claws.
I am in the process of installing a Wilk-Bilt Cars kit #wlk rem-2 (remote with Ball's actuators also I am using Dakota Digital Door poppers (they are small and the color is black) you can adjust the tension.
There will be a small water proof button installed on each side also (hidden). One other thing there will be a cable running from the engine compartment and thru the door just in case the battery fails I can still get in.
Definitely don't skimp on the solenoids. My truck had a cheap set of when I bought it. (Ball's low buck offering, no idea how many pounds) They wouldn't even pull bear claws open properly. The bear claws themselves did work real smooth though.

You got a PIC of the Maverick latches? I'd like to see a jamb view. I'm not really into shaved but it sounds like a neat mod.
PICs in your gallery, now there's a novel idea Chuck. The Maverick latches do have a similar appearance to a bear claw.
BTW, you have a very nice truck. Your excellent gallery slipped under the radar here somehow. I like your mods. Nice work without letting the project budget get too far out of hand. It's really going to be cool when it's done. Thanks for taking and sharing so many PICs. I regret not taking more of mine when it was scattered. Didn't think anybody would be interested.
The only pictures I have of the Merc right now are not digital and I don't have a scanner. I will post some on my gallery when I take it out next spring.
I think I will take the cover off and try to take a couple of shots in the garage today.
very nice looking period correct car Lake pipes, skirts, dice, nice looking car. Glad you didn't carry on with the "other " add on of the period "monkey nuts" Pom poms or the other numerous names for the little ***** around the window. Do you have under dash lights?? ( sex lights) Just kidding I like what you did thanks for taking the cover off.
Thanks guys. Picked up another doner car with a 302 H.O and AOD. Now I really have my work cut out for me. Going with the biggest poppers available and looking at the latches on the 5th ave and the LTD. Has anyone done a shaved rear door on a panel??? Need the passive latch on the drivers side. Maybe one of you could shoot me a photo or better yet sell me one if you have an extra. Now I need to get back to Oregon and get to work. the sun in AZ is great but can't get anything done on the panel. Sorry to have taken so long to respond but have been on the road.
