I need some tips on getting my engine and tranny bolted back together.Do I need to take the cross member that holds the transmission out to get them to line up?I am really making this hard on myself by working on the ground on my back and alone.I have tried jacking the tranny up but the angle is wrong and the clearance is just not there.I thought that I could get the rear tranny mount off but couldn't and ended up braking one of the bolt heads off.I know there is an easy way to go about this but I haven't stumble on to it yet.Sure could use a hand.BTW I have a 351 with an auto 4x4.Thanks,Ron
You should be able to manage by yourself ok. I've done it several times on the floor without any troubles. Is your engine still on the mounts? If so, you will need to pull the crossmember to get things to line. Yes, it is difficult to remove the crossmember on these trucks so you might consider raising the engine off it's mounts and line the engine up to the tranny rather than the other way round. You can also try jacking the engine under a manifold or so with a bottle jack to change the angle for attaching engine & tranny.
thanks loud,I ended up taking the cross member out and lined it up with some long capscrews which worked pretty good. This has been a very frustrating operation simply because of Murphy.Seems like every thing I touched broke or snapped off or didn't work right.I have never broken so many bolts and they ain't coming out.I've tried heat and liquid wrench and easy outs and drilling and just about any other blind hole gizmo or gadget that might do the trick and I fought with every one of them.Yesterday I thought that I might gain some clearance buy taking the back mount off the tranny.I managed to snap the head off one of the cap screws. My impact wouldn't budge it and heat didn't work so I double wrenched it,bad idea. Now I will have to try and drill it out and hopefully won't break an easy out.My next step is gonna be a 7018.Ron
