Hi All, I have a 1986 Ford F250, 4X4 with a 6.9L diesel and a 4 speed manual trans(No OD). I have the granny gear in it, 15 mph tops in first. In forth I run at about 2500 rpms at 75mph. My axles have 3:55 gears in them. I will be using this truck to go to work, camping and driving dirt roads (sometime muddy roads) traveling. Towing a camper maybe. No rock climbing. I want to get the best MPG I can and not lose the power the diesel gives me. My question, is it to my benefit to change ring and pinion gears to different ones and if so what should I go to?
Still trying to figure that out with oversize tires on it, I have 265/75R 16 and the speedo is off. I using my Garmin to try and get the correct mileage. I should know the next time I fill the tanks.
You do not need to change the gearing, you need to change to a zf overdrive transmission. That way you will retain the performance you have now, and gain the overdrive to drop the rpms. That is what I swapped into my truck, I have a 89 f250 with the 7.3 diesel, no turbo.
I started out with the c6 originally, and it was noisy, high rpms going down the interstate. I swapped in the zf and I gained 3 mpg and it's so much quieter going down the road without the engine winding out.

X2, 3.55s with an OD, stock tires, and the IDI will get you great mileage (for a truck)
