1997 F250 7.3

I’m thinking about purchasing a 97 4 door short box 250. The exterior and interior look really great. Plus, it’s the red, white, red color combo that I prefer. I’m a little hesitant due to the trans never being rebuilt. Nothing has been replaced on the 7.3 either. It currently has 286,xxx miles on it. Only going by the pictures and haven’t seen it in person yet.

Are parts still easily obtainable? The owner wants 11,500 OBO, but it feels like it will be a money pit seeing everything is still original. Been searching for the right OBS for a moment and so far this truck checks most of the boxes

He must have never pulled anything heavy with it and serviced the trans often. At that high price it should be rust free!

I’m trying to meet up with him. It’s an hour and a half away. Judging by the pics it looks decent, but hopefully will know soon enough. I’m not sure if I will meet him at that price seeing everything is original. It seems like the value book goes out the window for these trucks due to the recent demand for them. We will see if it’s meant to be.

5 speed manual trans or automatic? Parts are still available . If 5 speed you will be looking at a clutch. If auto it will be a crap shoot how long it will last. Others that have auto trans will chime in. At 280000 my injectors needed to be rebuilt, about $1200. If nothing on the engine has ever been changed you have the small stuff like water pump ,vacuum pump, idlers and such that will need to be replaced in the future. Hard to believe nothing has been changed . $11500 seems high to me but IDK.

Hey buddy, it’s an auto and the price seems high for me as well. However, I feel the same about most of the OBS prices I have looked at the past year. He probably won’t accept my offer if I decide going with it.

I would never pay that much for a truck with 286K on it, that truck should sell for 8K at best.

That is what I was going to offer if I decide to go with it after seeing it in person later this week. He will say no, but he is the 3rd owner and has very limited history of the truck

There are a lot of things you should check. Do a dead cold start if you can. A warm engine will start a lot more quickly than a cold engine. Check for blow by. Check the turbo for dusting. There is a list of things to check floating around some where on the forum but I can not find it. Maybe someone can link it up for you. Good luck.

Prices have gone up a bit in my area but still decent for rust free trucks.
