How exactly does regen work?

We've had our truck for a week yesterday, and we're at 750 miles. It just went through its second regen today. The first regen happened when I was on the freeway at 70mph. It went from 100% full to empty in about 10 to 15 minutes. Today, it was at 50% when I got where I was going, but I was on the phone so I just let it idle so it could finish the regen. It went down to 15% and stayed there for awhile, so I figured I'd go drive for a few minutes so it could finish the complete regen, but during the drive it went back up to 20%.

My question is, is it normal that it doesn't always go all the way back down to 0%? I didn't get a CEL and it didn't give me a warning, so I'm just curious if this is somewhat normal?

You should download the 6.7L Coffee book and read it. It will help you understand the emission on this engine.

You have two types of Regen on your truck. Active Regen and Passive Regen

active regen is when your DPF is full and the truck pump fuel into the exhaust system to perform an Active Regen. Temps raise to high 1100 degrees or even 1200 degrees. It runs for 15-25 minutes.

Passive Regen happens anytime your exhaust temps are over 572 degrees and will last as long as the heat is present.

Most people think tooo much about regen. It's not a big deal to shut down in the middle and the truck will pick it up later

Once in park the regen was cancelled. You did the right thing by letting idle a few minutes to get the unburt fuel out of the cylinders but that was the extent of it.

I like knowing how things work, that's all. I didn't know any manual went that in depth to how it worked, I figured asking here would get me the cliff notes.

I'm not sure where you can download it from anymore. It's about a 90 page PDF that explains the 6.7L engine and how it works.
Google 67L_Diesel Coffee Book.pdf and see if you can find it. It's good reading.
Also DEFforDummiesFCSD.pdf is a good read on how DEF works in your truck

Is it basically a principle of operations book? Because that'd be awesome if it was.

No, it does not always go all the way to 0%. Usually 15% is as low as mine goes. before it exits the cycle, and is driving highway speeds, it will continue to burn down to about 5%. After 7000+ miles, I'm used to, 'it does what it does'.

I don't know if there is a newer one out, I downloaded and have kept a copy on my hard disk from 2011. Hence my not offering to send it and telling the poster to google for something newer.

regardless of the age, It shows you where most of the parts are on the engine and how they are designed to work

This was put out in 2011, when the 6.7 first came out, but everything should still be pretty mch the same.

Where/ how does it inform you that you’re going through a Regen? I have 1,300 miles on my 2018 and have no idea?

I have an XL trim and opted for the user command operated regen so I have a DEF % screen that I can go to and see when it hits 100%, and then when it goes into regen you see the percent go down. I’ll take a pic of it tomorrow.

If I’m in park and it hits 100% full I can make it go into regen manually as well.

On the 2011-2016 you used to get a message flash telling you regen was starting. 2017 and newer you will not get any message unless you use ForScan or have your dealer turn on the DPF screen.
It's really a non-event. You will smell a hot burning odor if you stop and get out while regen is happening, You can see your fuel mileage drop during regen. But for the most part. You don't evenknow it's happening
