New guy here. We recently bought a 2006 Super Cab Short box F350 4x4 with the V10. We plan on using it for cross county trips with a slide in camper. Some off-roading as well. I picked the V10 for the power (and boy howdy, it has it) and the reliability.
What I’ve done so far:
2006 w/ 123K
changed the plugs (latest design)
changed the boots w/ denso boots
fuel filter
oil (Mobil one) and motorcraft filter
Royal purple diff fluid
transmisson fluid and filters
transfer case fluid
New calipers.
5star tuner (not installed yet)
Truck seems to run and drive great but are these as reliable as they once were considered to be? I’m concerned because I’ve read some negatives lately but they seem to be centered around the 450/550 trucks.

i don’t expect you to be disappointed.
At that age and mileage I expect you’ll be running into the usual problems that I see people talk about on here.
-catalytic converters going bad
-exhaust manifold studs breaking off
-possibly have a bad coil or two: you can change them all for less than $250 or you can chase around a bad one for $25 plus triple your labor time.
-PCV elbow causing lean codes
spend a bunch of time on this forum and you’ll get very familiar. Good people and info here.

If you think it has power now wait until you install the tuner and get rid of the sluggishness in the drive by wire!
maybe the vans are different… I have absolutely no concerns about sluggishness or throttle feel. I’ve seen a lot of guys complain about it on this forum. Regarding their trucks. Full disclosure: I know nothing about tuners, I’ve never had.

Look at it like this. Before the tunes, my truck would only chirp the tires when really getting after it from a dead stop. After tuner, the tires will literally roast themselves and create a smoke storm. Now, I have only done this a couple of times in the many years I have had the tuner. I treat my truck pretty gentle overall. But, this does show the effect of off idle throttle response the tunes give you. It made the truck drive as though it lost 1000 lbs of weight. Incredible!

for the record I’m not speaking poorly of any tuners. They could be amazing. I’ve just always wondered when people have concerns about poor throttle response from the factory. Maybe it’s just an opinion thing.
Post a video of your smokey burnout.

This is because your van is a 2 valve and has an actual cable that goes from the accelerator pedal to the throttle plate. The 3 valve trucks are electronically controlled and ford has it very dumbed down even the new cars and trucks the throttle response is delayed especially in certain situations but just starting off it takes more pedal input then it should to get things moving.

i don’t know about the OP’s 2006 truck but my 2007 E350 does not have a throttle cable.
