Dunno about gas stations, but there are micro breweries all over the place - and the content of some of that stuff is pretty respectable.

I noticed something called "SPARKS" that has ginseng in it and tastes like orange coolade: but it's SEVEN percent...

California alcoholic beverage law basics.

Age limit 21 to buy or consume, 18 to sell or serve, go figure.
Sale hours 06:00 to 02:00 seven days a week.
Beer, wine, spirits sold in bars, restaurants, grocery stores, drug stores, etc. with proper license.
No state stores.

Now, the answer to your basic question is complicated.

If the word "beer" is on the container, the limit is 4.0 percent by volume. They actually vary from 3.2 to 3.9, no way of telling.

Exception 1, five percent may be stated on the container and still say "beer".

Exception 2, if the word "beer" does not appear, but ale, draft, malt beverage, malt liquor, porter, stout, etc it may be as high as they can make it without adding distilled spirits. An extreme example is "Old English 800", which is a code for 8.00 percent. You can't get drunk on the stuff because it tastes so bad that you can't choke down even one can!

Please don't ask me how I know.

Jim
