Shake during braking

I recently purchased an 03 Nav off-lease. The front-end and steering wheel shakes violently when applying light break at highway speeds. The problem is more intermittent at slower speeds. Any ideas? the vehichle should be in certified condition..

Sounds like warped rotors. You are still under warranty aren't you? Did you not test drive before purchasing?

I agree with Jim - rotors are probably all funky.

I'd get it checked out and fixed under warranty.

Sounds like warped rotors to me too, especially with the light application of the brakes at highway speeds. Did it happen on the test drive or is it that you didn't go on a highway????

We didnt take the highway on the test drive. Is under warranty so I will find out tomorrow if it is the rotors. Was quite suprised to feel such a vibration in a certified p-o vehicle.

I've always been leery of dealerships who use the "c" word and hype such vehicles. Seems like ploy to sell a vehicle at a higher price without necessarily performing all the checks they advertise. Maybe I'm just paranoid?

"Rounding the rotors" involves taking metal off the pad contact surfaces--if they were warped already on an '03, they will warp again--especially if you have to shower down on the brakes in a panic stop. Don't be surprised if you have the same problem in about 8-10000 miles. The rotors don't have a lot of mass to start with--shaving them to true them makes them thinner and thus they don't handle heat well as before the truing.

Good luck--the Nav is a great sport ute.

Agree with V10... rotors should have been replaced.

Maybe get some agreement with the dealership that if the problem surfaces again within a certain mileage they will replace.

It's almost a guaranteed thing that you'll experience this again...
