I have a 1950 F1 and would like to mount a tach....somewhere. It has a tilt column with an automatic transmission...not much room on column. Has a new gauge cluster, (came with it), speedometer says 20 when I'm doing ~45mph.
I used one of the screws for the wiper motor, just to the center of the defroster diffuser screw, to mount my tach. It's just about perfect, high enough and close to line of sight when driving to enable a quick glance.
I just got this from a fella on ebay. 40's to early 50's Sun tach...he puts all solid state parts in it so it can run on 6v, 12v, or even 24V with no updates needed, not "transmitter box" like some tachs needed, and no complicated wiring. Not inexpensive, by any means, but it's plug & play. Came with a steering column mount, but I don't want to block any of my gauges. He set it up for the Flathead 6 RPM range (max at 5K), but will modify it for free if I ever swap engines and need a larger RPM range. I can share his info if anyone wants it.
I like the dash mount idea by ALBUQ using one of the wiper motor screws. That's a good place for it.

That's a real interesting piece! Appears to be for aircraft?

My PO had "thoughtfully" drilled a hole at the upper edge of the chrome strip above the radio grille, for a big sheet metal screw. I used that.
ALBUQ, SUN designed these tachs after the war when the whole "aviation theme" was just taking off. That's one of the reasons I like it. It actually looks very similar to a tach I have in my office from a P-47 Thunderbolt.

Is that seller W702X on eBay? If so, that's one helluva expensive tach.....

It is...and it was I made him an offer on one, but it was still very expensive. But I'm thinking: fully tested, plug & play unit with solid state internals, no need for one of those transmitter boxes, and the exact design I want in my RPM range will off-set the ulcer I got from paying for it, lol
Yeah. It is pretty nice. I assume you have a 48-52...... where are you mounting it?
My particular setup is electronic ignition off of the original loadomatic distributor. I'd have
to quiz the eBay seller if the proper tach signal is coming off the coil negative terminal, assuming
I could find room physically for the tach itself.
Yup, I have a '50. Haven't decided where it's going yet. If I put it on the column, it will block some of the gauges. Not keen on drilling through the dash for the wires. I may fabricate a bracket so it comes up from under the dash, but I'll sort that out when the weather gets better up here.
The seller is very knowledgeable...he actually doesn't stop talking once you get him on the phone. But he'll ask what it's going in, + or - ground, recommend an rpm range, tell you how to wire it (and send intstructions), and will update it in any way in the future (different rpm range for engine swap, fix any internals that fail, etc.)
