Ton's of 6.0's running around the world that are not "bullet proofed" that are towing, getting the crap worked out of them and running just as good as one that is studded.
It's been a few years since the 6.0 came out, so here is a short refresher.
The majority of guys that had trouble with the heads lifting were the one that tuned the ever living crap out of them and then wondered why they had issues.
Sure, the EGR coolers can go bad, but many times was a result of too much tuning and ends up being a chain reaction, and one can probably blame the Ford factory fill coolant for some of those woes........nothing to do with the engine. They didn't see those issues with other platforms that ran better coolant.
Oil coolers can fail, yes. Not an expensive fix if you know what to look for.
The other problem is any other fault with a 6.0, not related to the engine itself and rather the chassis or electrical, gets lumped into the "I hated my 6.0" when the problem had nothing to do with the engine.
I would buy another 6.0 with TTY's in a heartbeat if it checked out ok.
There isn't much the average guy who can turn a wrench can't work on with a 6.0 if you care to do some homework and ask questions.
I haven't found a 6.0 I like so far unfortunately. I'm going to go look at an 05 F350 4x4 long bed auto today for $13400 but if it isn't bulletproofed I probably won't want to have anything to do with it. I went to go look at an 04 that was bulletproofed at a dealer and I told them I was coming. When I get there they said they sold it and the other truck I came to look at.
i found an 01 F350 short bed 4x4 7.3 that's in super good shape with less than 200k miles that I'm strongly considering now so we shall see.
I looked at a bunch of vehicles before I found mine. It was in Prescott, an '04 DRW with 57K miles, and looks new - the engine has a giant blue 2003 model motor label on it.
If you're willing to get a DRW you will find some crazy deals as lots of people don't want one, they think it's just too much truck. The other plus side is I seriously doubt anybody is doing performance tunes on duallies. They're not the first choice for lifting, and running big tires - they're tow vehicles.
There is actually a couple in the Phoenix area that are DRW and 4x4 with a 6.0 and they are a super good deal but I just don't want a dually right now. I was starting to contemplate it a little bit because of the deals.

Mine's an FX4 with 57K. I pulled the oasis and besides the guy having to replace the rear oil seal a few times, it's had no major issues. They printed the full report, and I got the 5 speed auto and a 4:10 gear ratio. Rear axle is rated 8250 lbs. Cab lights everywhere. I had the original tires (almost worn down) with 2003 date codes. $15K.
DRW is the way to go if you're looking for deals and mostly unmolested trucks. Here it is right after putting a set of BFG K02 LT235/85R16 AT tires on it:
I would recommend holding out for an 05+ that has coils up front if u r looking at a 4x4. There are a few of us in AZ so depending on where u are looking there are people who might have the equipment to scan.
I am a little jealous. I have been wantign a 6.0 for a few years now. My current ruck runs so frikkin good that getting rid of it would be dumb, but I need a CC. I feel like I could tackle anything the 6.0 could throw at me, but it's more a time availability issue for me. Maybe once I finish grad school I can look then. I would love to get one and just go through it (FICM, EGR delete, remote oil cooler) and then leave the rest stock and see how it does. Mine would get the **** worked out of it and I have heard that is what they need.
