HELP! Am I getting ripped off?

Hey all need a little help with a jet ski question. Our jet ski was running pretty rough so we took it to a shop about a month and half ago, well today I call to see whats up and they tell me the engine is seized up replacement cost is 1300-2200$. Now when we took it in it did run and had plenty of oil and it was burning oil a good bit more than usual. Now I dont know alot about jet ski engines but its hard to believe that an engine could seize up when it still runs and is burning oil. Anyone know something I don't? Thanks for the help.

2 strokes are suppose to burn oil. Thats how they are lubricated. If the engine still ran when you brought it to them them I am 99.9% sure that this particular shop is trying to pull a fast one on you. Engines don't sieze overnight.

Even though they are very simple, 2-strokes can give lots of trouble. High performance, liquid cooled 2-strokes are very sensitive to lean mixtures. It may be burning oil, but if it is lean it will overheat and seize. If you really think you are being ripped off, make them prove it. If the engine is apart, make them show you the pistons and cylinder. If it was seized, the pistons should be in bad shape. The cylinder walls may be scarred, maybe not. If the engine is still together, tell them you want to be there when they remove the head. Make them show you that it is seized.

If you are not in a hurry to get this thing back, go to the shop and ask them for the spark plugs (gotta be the ones that were in it when it seized). When you do, let me know. I can tell what the running conditions were by a plug description.

Not knowing much about a jet ski, assuming it is sort of like a boat, if the engine was run out of the water any length of time, as in testing it, would not the engine seize because the water cools the engine jacket?

Yep. If this happened, it wouldn't take long at all to seize.

I would show up unannounced and make them show you the engine and let you test it.

HELP! Am I getting ripped off?

OK I talked to the actual mechanic instead of whoever it was last time and he said that the engine had gotten rusty from not running in awhile and had seized up in that manner. This does seem possible as we bought it used when it was 3yrs old with 50 hours on it. However we have had it for almost two years with it running fine. Also the spark plugs were changed when it first started acting up so probly not much you can tell by them. It hasnt been run out of water by us for more than a minute or two while cleaning unless they ran it out of water and I just cant see a mechanic being that stupid. Thanks for all the suggestions im gonna call soem other places tommorrow see what they say and will definately drop by to look at the engine. Thanks again everyone.

HELP! Am I getting ripped off?

Go pick up your jet ski, thank them and pay them a few bucks for their time spent on your machine. Be nice don't burn any bridges, you might need to pick up a $.50 part there one day out of desperation, you don't want to end up paying $5.00 for it. Then go out and get a 2nd and 3rd opinion on the state of the machine. I learned a while ago if your dealing with something new to you and dealing in a field your not sure about, pay the extra few bucks to have more than one shop to look it over. Be sure to tell the other shops you've had others look at it, but don't tell them what the diagnosis was. Just let them know nicely, thats what your paying them to do.

I agree with Nutter, take it back and tell them you're not able to afford to have it repaired at this time (or some other reason). The rust excuse sounds worse then the seized engine story.

"I just cant see a mechanic being that stupid" never over estimate the intelligence of people you don't know. A lot of smaller places have one real mechanic and a couple guys that you wouldn't let WASH your car if you knew who they where.
