Hey guys, i'm not sure if this has been covered or not. If it has, i'm sorry for repeating a thread. So, guess what happened! My spare key has gone missing, I believe we may of lost it at a race track. So I called the dealer for a replacement. They want $240 for the fob and $90 for the key insert, they also want the truck for the day to program the new key to the old. My question to the forum is.... Can we program the keys our-self? Is this a FORScan type of deal or a cycle the key on and on 50 times? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, I have the key-less ignition with a 5 button fob. Just in case anyone from ford service is reading this and can advise. Thanks in advance.
Have you looked on ebay for a key ? Seems like I saw some pretty cheap w/uncut key . I know we can program a third key , but I'm not positive if you can program from one original . I'm sure someone will chime in that has more knowledge about that .
It would not let me post with the above picture. The above transponder key cost me $75 to get cut. It is a transponder key. You need to keys programmed to your truck to program a third key. If you do not have two keys then they have to program it on a computer to match your truck. That's how it's been for years but they lil tray may do it if you have two. I always get me a third just incase I lose one that I don't have to leave my truck somewhere to go home and get my spare. I carry the above on my house keys in my pocket.

You need two keys to program a 3rd. So you are stuck with the dealer option now.
You can buy spare FOBs for the Keyless Ignition for $65-$80 on Ebay. It cost $45 to get the high security key cut.
A Lot of the spare FOBs you buy on Ebay are used. They have the key blank already cut so you FOBYou can program but you need to buy a key blank if you want to cut a mechanical key that will fit your door spare tire etc
$59 on Amazon for a 164-R8166 and an uncut key insert.
That's great news. Just ordered the key fob and uncut key from amazon. Will any locksmith be able to cut that key or is it a dealer only type of deal? I know the dealer will have to program the fob to the truck...
Just ran across this on the web. Has anybody ever tried this? If so, any success? How to program a new remote key fob for Ford:
After you have your new key fob, get in the vehicle with the fob and the actual key, and close the doors.
Turn the key into an “on” position and press the lock button on the new key fob, then turn the key back into the “off” position
Repeat that three more times so you turn the key to “on” and “off: a total of four times. After you’ve turned the key to “off” for the fourth time, turn it back to “on”
You should hear the locks sound, which means you are then in programming mode. After you hear the locks, press the “lock” button on your remote again within 5 seconds. The locks will cycle on and off one more time to tell you that the vehicle is programmed.
If you press “lock” again on any other remote within 10 seconds of entering programming mode, those fobs will program as well.
When you are finished, turn the ignition to “off” to end the programming.
If you buy an ESP with the "Key Services" option, the new fob, fob-programming and cut key can be obtained from any Ford dealer for the cost of your deductible amount ($0 in my case).

Unless Ford has changed something, one has to have (2) two workings keys for the vehicle in order for you, the owner to program another one otherwise a trip to the dealer will be required. You can find these OEM key fobs and an uncut key that slides into the fob on eBay for less money but you`ll still have to make a trip to the Ford service department for programming and there`s a good chance they won`t program it because you didn`t purchase it from them.

Thats older Ford key programming technology and it doesn`t apply to intelligent access/keyless ignition.
I just ran across this issue with my 2017 F-250 Lariat ultimate. I bought the key fob off eBay for $89 and paid an independent master locksmith $65 to program the fob and cut the key. He did it all in about 15 mins. He did have to use his fancy scan tool and laptop to program the fob. Call around and see if you have a master locksmith in your area who can do it. It was much easier than dealing with my local dealer. YMMV.
My dealer was not low cost. They wanted $240 for the fob and $125 in labor to program it to my truck......and they wanted me to leave my truck for a couple of days until they could get to it. They are idiots if they thought I was gonna do that. A lot cheaper my way and it’s been working fine ever since.
You need 2 programmed and functioning key fobs to program an additional fob. That is why I buy a 3rd fob immediately when I buy a car or truck.
Without 2 programmed fobs you will need to go to the dealer to get a new key/fob programmed.
I bought new OEM key fobs for my ultimate form ebay. Programmed it myself. I brought the blank key to my dealer and they cut the key for free. Dealers in Bradenton Florida and Okeechobee Florida both cut my keys for free.
