Any time you replace or repair a power steering system component you need to install a filter in the return line from the steering unit to the pump. This includes replacing a hose, pump, or steering box. Failure to do this is the leading cause of noisy pumps.
You can get a filter from your local parts house or from Ford.

The Ford filter kit has some fittings in it for use with transmission cooling lines. I don't use them, I just cut the cooling return line and bulge the end of the lines with a double flare tool to provide a hose retainer bead. Any time you service your automatic transmission you should install a filter also.
Thanks Torque1st. All I did was incrementally replace most of the fluid in my wife's Aerostar with a turkey baster. The fluid was brown and now it is red . The pump is a tad noisy, kind of a whine noise. Been that way for a while. Highly suspect would be the return line filter. I will look in my Chilton's for the procedure, though I don't recall it being mentioned there.
Be nice if Auto trannies came with drain plugs and spin on filters, aye?
Looked in my Chilton and my Haynes for the Aerostar and don't see anything about the power steering filter. Suspect it comes with replacement pumps and otherwise never gets changed. Wonder if the parts store even stocks them. Anyway, where is the filter located?
