Hitch Lock Recommendations?

Guys,
Just bought a new year-old 2017 F-250 that had been sitting around on a dealer's lot for a year because it was a regular cab, long bed--nobody else wanted it but just what I needed! Getting ready to pull an RV, but really struggling with hitch locks. I gather the main hitch receiver on the truck is a 3" hitch and it also comes with an insert that takes it down (I think) to 2", and a non-lockiing hitch pin that is rated 21,000. I am trying desperately to figure out how to lock my Equalizer WDH to the truck while I am out and about on camping trips, but I am despairing at even figuring out what I need, much less finding it. I think I am going to need a 5/8 inch diameter pin, well longer than 3" so it goes all the way through both the main hitch and the insert with enough length to lock it on the other side. It also needs to have decent capacity to pull my RV (though I don't need 21,000 pounds!). Anyone got any counsel on what to buy and where to buy it? Thanks so much!

I like the BOLT locking 5/8" receiver pin. The BOLT locks allow you to use the side cut key from you truck. I've been using BOLT products for years - I really like not having to worry about an extra key.

With the "keyless" key fob for my 2017 F-250 Platinum, I just use the emergency key within the fob - easy to pull-out and use when needed.

Amazon has them for $30.

"BOLT part number is 7023585 5/8" Receiver Lock for Side Cut Ford, Lincoln, & Land Rover Keys"

Fits fine in my receiver.

I use the same and am happy with it.

OP, yours will likely use a different Bolt part number. I would assume being a regular cab that you don't have the "keyless" ignition. Make sure to check out Bolt's site to confirm you get the correct lock for YOUR style factory key.

The pin that comes with the truck isn’t hardened, so I put mine in a drill press and enlarged the hole so it would accept a padlock instead of the pin. I have a set of 4 keyed alike locks in my camper that I use to lock up my ladder and dump tank while I’m at the campsite so I just use one of those to lock the hitch on.

Excellent point - you have to take care to get the correct BOLT model to fit the truck key.

A standard length Bolt lock will not work on the 3" receiver models. I tried using the locks from my 2015 SD with the 2.5" receiver and it did not have enough clearance for the pin to lock on the bolt. I have a Gen-Y hitch and they have addressed the problem by machining their bolts to match the Bolt lock in both size shanks - they worked with Bolt to supply their hitches. So, for the 3" you need to make sure it is long enough and the bolt lock works with the laser cut key. I am gong to see if the dealership will cut me some valet keys to keep on my trailer key set.

Guys,
Appreciate all the input. Looks like the Bolt is one good way to go. I checked and even with my key, it looks like it is the same model number Bolt Lock 7023585. I assume this weird looking key I got with the truck is what is called a "side cut" key? Thanks for all your good counsel!

I use Bolt also.

It automatically programs itself to your key the first time you insert your key to the lock cylinder. It’s genious.

It is set to your ignition key. So once it's set it's married to the truck. You only can set it once.
