Reman. Engine Experiences

Hello All,
Developed a knock in my 06 F-250 6.8L on Friday.
Oil pressure good. (checked with mechanical gauge)
Pulled valve covers. Plenty of oil up top, no sign of cam follower or chain issues.
Cut open oil filter, babbit in the filter pleats.
What have your experiences been with remanned engines? Motorcraft. Jasper etc. Have seen prices all over the place on Ebay. Gonna check Jasper and ford prices at dealers tomorrow.
Is it worth pulling engine and replacing bottom end bearings if no crank damage is found? Engine has140K miles.
I can't believe these trucks were designed in a way that the oil pan can't be dropped in the truck.

designed for FAST assembly... they do not care how long any service takes... not in a very long time..

Jasper is not as good as it was 10 years ago...

reman's are installed every day...

the chance of your crank being OK.. is slim .. but worth LOOKING.. before trashing it.

Thanks Chuck,
I used to throw bearings and an oil pump in my small block powered square Chevy 4x4's after work on the lift when I used to worked in the garage.
" oil pressure getting low... throw bearings and a pump in 'er. good for another 20,000 miles"
I've heard the same about Jasper and no warranty if a Jasper dealer doesn't do the install.
I figure since the engines coming out either way its worth taking journal measurements and doing the bearings if no wear is evident.

Best of Luck... figure the worst... but this might be your lucky day.

if you can not find 'Why' the bearing spun... but crank is good.. loc-tite replacement bearing in place.
my opinion.

I've also heard bad things about Jasper remans, seems like Motorcraft is the engine of choice for those who opt for a remanufactured engine.

I've been researching this and it looks like Jasper isn't well regarded. they might have gotten too big to control quality, or they might sell so many motors that there's statistically just a high number (but low percentage) of bad motors they put out.
For the money they charge, I'd rather go directly with Ford rebuilt motor, but even those are pricey.

I haven't used them, but Powertrain Products seems to offer a reasonably priced longblock motor and they get high marks in reviews and on the BBB.
might be another option.

what about a used engine from a wrecking yard... just a thought....

the 6.8L is a common engine in the Fleet world.. be sure you get the same type of 6.8.. ( 2 or 3 valve )

I have an aging 6.8 in my 01 and have been making the same considerations as you. I've found just about any sizeable remanufacturing company will have some negative reviews, some scathing ones. I've also seen many inquiries such as yours and not yet found any consistent response recommending one brand or another, although Motorcraft seems to be the best. My take is that it would be great if we could find out how many of a certain engine each "reman" company does in a year so we could access the failure rate based on that rather than reviews than may be vengeful from an unknown few frustrated costumers. As a result of the inconsistency I am finding, I have decided to look for a low mileage salvage engine, they're a few out there. I'm finding they cost about half a Motorcraft remanufactured engine.

As for warranties, reman or salvage, they vary. But if you read them carefully, most of them, favor the seller to the point that "almost any excuse is good enough'" to deny the claim, that's not just Jasper as mentioned above. Here again, Motorcraft seems to rise above the rest.

If you decide to seek a used engine, you should only consider one the seller is willing to pull the valve cover and let you inspect it for sludge, as well as provide a complete compression test. The V10 is pretty tough and just about any of them with good compression and no sludge and less than 50-75 K would be a sure bet.

I bought a reman 4.6L for my 2003 Mountaineer last January from them. AWESOME service and delivery. Ordered Tuesday afternoon and it was at the shop Thursday morning.
20k on it since then and it runs sweet, quiet and pulls super hard for a smaller V-8.

I'll look into them. I'm in no special hurry as I think my tick is piston slap.

Local Ford dealer quoted $5800. for a reman plus $800 core. Jasper dealer has not gotten back to me yet.
Local truck only salvage yard has none right now.
Going to install rod bearings tomorrow.
Cheated a little with the sawzall and made a removable engine cross member. Pan slid out no problem.
# 2 rod bearing was bad. I think this much time on my buddies lift warrants 3 cases of Moosehead for shop space rental.

Since they are still offering the V-10 in the medium duty 650-750 trucks and class A motorhomes, I would assume you can get one brandie new. But OH MY what the price on one of those bad boys must be.

that price is INSANE.
A brand new 5.0L Coyote fully dressed with EFI on it is barely more than that direct from Ford.

https://www.ford.com/commercial-truc...f53-motorhome/ (Open the Specifications pull down.)

I thought Ford was only continuing the twenty valve V10's but it looks like they are still manufacturing both the twenty valve and thirty valve V10's. That said, I would have NO idea how to get a new one! Probably your local parts guy wouldn't either. Price wise, I would guess you are looking at northwards of $12K. IF these engines' ECM/PCM systems use CANBUS now, they may be unusable in an older truck extensive modifications.

If you start looking at HP and Torque spec's on these engines, remember they won't be the same as the F-250/F350 numbers due to a variety of factors even though the engines are essentially the same.
