I would go with black but it all depends on your interior color..... whatever you decide, spray on a good primer coat or two first. Not sure about natural look, I think paint would look
and hold up better.

Originally, there was a paint on the springs. The color varied somewhat by year.

I used the hammered silver that i purchased for the heater and sprayed it. But the i only got fancy on the parts that will show. The inner springs got dusted and that's all. I'm hoping they never get wet

I had my 54 seat sandblasted and primered two years ago. I painted the springs black from a cheap rattle can I had. The springs were not painted but the frame was. This is a pic after I stripped all the old stuff off and before it was sandblasted.

The Z springs on my 55 seat bottom were coated with a rubber type material... interesting.

I have spent a lot of time researching 54 to 56 seats. I have found that they all had argent silver runners, the part that bolts into the floor. In 54 the brackets on the seat bottom that bolt onto the seat runners and the seat back arms were a brown color. The brown is like one of those metal folding chairs:

Here is a picture of a low mileage 1954 firetruck that shows the stock color of runners and seat brackets and arm.

Here is a pic of my restored 54 seat. I couldn't find the exact brown color.

I have found that the 55 and 56 stock seats I have seen have a gray seat back arm and the seat brackets were black. Here is the seat to my 55 F350 which is unmolested.

Here are other 55 stock seats showing the gray and black paint.

this one is a low mileage 56 firetruck

a 55 firetruck

Here is a picture of my repainted 55 seat with its original woven vinyl material but with new vinyl surrounds and black beading.

Here is a picture of the rubber coating on the Z springs of the seat bottom of my 55.

The seat back Z springs and coil springs were not painted.
