California Car?
I'm moving to CA from SC. I purchased a used 96 Ranger while in SC. I now have to make the decision to bring the car to CA or not. I'm in CA so I can't check the certification sticker on the truck and wonder if there's any website (or other resource) I can check by VIN# to see if the vehicle is compliant with CA smog rules?

All you have to do to register in CA is make sure it passes a CA smog test. Since its only a 96 (relatively new), there should be no problem. If you have any doubts, you can get a "pre-inspection" that doesn't get recorded and sent to the state. Seems to me that most automakers have been installing "California" emissions stuff on all cars now, maybe because they dont want to design 2 different emissions systems, and many states are getting stricter smog rules now, but CAs are still the strictest. Easy answer? make 'em all CA-compliant!

Even if it doesn't have California spec emissions, you can still run it and register it here. California isn't that nutty. You simply have to pass the federal limits for your vehicle. The DMV used to charge $300 to bring a non-CA spec vehicle into California, but that was ruled illegal.
