Can anyone recommend a voltage regulator upgrade?

1991 F250 Diesel. Things appear normal for the most part. I have tightened wires and connections but the volt meter on the dash and the battery light both flicker with the same pulse as if someone's heart was connected to the meter (about once a second). I read somewhere, and now I can't find it, that it might be an older or a failing voltage regulator. I recall a mention of an electronic regulator as opposed to one that uses solenoids to function. I know older regulators (the tall ones) used coils but I know very little of the flatter ones like on my truck. Could I be suffering regulator problems or is there a more likely suspect? If the regulator is suspect, is there a better one I can install without breaking the bank?

Thanks.

Eric

The electronic ones are better. that being said I would swap the puppy over to a 3g ford alternater in a heart beat.

Thank you. Can you help a rookie with the terms? What is a "3g" alternator and where should I get one?

3G is the next generation of alternator Ford installed in their vehicles; after the 2G that came stock on your truck. The swap is super easy. You cut out the voltage regulator, use the existing green/red wire for charge signal to the alternator, run a wire to the positive battery terminal for reference voltage, and 6 gauge charge wire with 150 amp circuit breaker/fuse to the positive battery terminal. Alternator outputs are 95 or 130 amp for most stock applications, with higher ones built by third party manufacturers. Case styles vary from 7" and 8.25" ear spacing to side mount. Wiring diagrams are everywhere, along with instructions and videos.

I didn't answer where you should get one. I'm not familiar with diesel motors; what is the bolt spacing for the mounting ears on your alternator, and what amperage output do you need?

You got the old style sorta first generation alternator. The one you want uses the 8.25 mounting spacing. The best 3g for your application is from a 1991-1992 Ford Taurus you will have to use your pulley. If you can get the whole alternator wiring harness. There are several online sites including ebay selling new and used alternators.
