Question ENGINE SWAPS

I'm currently running a 300 6cyl with a c6 trans in my 72/78 4x4 ford truck, is it worth doing a 302 swap or just run the 300 because of reliability. I'm going to use the truck for hunting, fishing, and riding around. I'm in the process of trying to go threw every thing because it hasn't been on the road in over 12 years. Just wanting too see what everyone else thinks about the 300 vs the 302.

i would stick with the 300.
the 300 makes its power at low rpm's
302 is more of a high rpm power maker

All the 300's I have been around have been great engines. I'm not looking for top end power, just wanted to see what thought others had about the 300 vs a v8.

Blasphemy! Well there is some truth there...302’s perform their best at high rpms fo sure.
I had an 88 Bronco with a 302/AOD combo and it worked pretty well for off-roading and driving around.
Engine was a roller with a mild cam, gt40p heads, and shorty headers. Truck had 6” of lift on 35’s and 4.88 gears. I could get 18mpg on the highway, I road tripped in the thing quite a bit and calculated my mileage pretty regularly.
So...it did have two scenarios where I wished I had more torque down low.
First was in really thick snow or mud...I mean thick like almost up to the bumpers. Water was not too much of a problem.
Second was at high altitude. I drove the truck from Ohio to Oregon one year and the speed density fuel injection really had a hard time with the altitude. When I hit Cheyenne Wyoming and started up into the mountains power dropped off dramatically. I had to downshift into 2 and drive at like 45mph. I don’t really know if this was due to the fuel injection system or the fact that it was like -10 degrees but I thought it was worth mentioning.

I am still considering a 300 six for my 76 F250...maybe I’ll pull my 390 some day when I am finally sick of getting 8 mpg!
