First oil change on my 2017 F150 and noticed the Owner Manual specified oil filter was slightly shorter than what came off.
Maybe should be using different filter?

Everything was telling me it was the right one and other than slightly longer no real difference. Maybe a break-in filter? But she seems just fine! Thanks
I've seen several instances where filters "look" different, but as long as the threads are correct, and the gasket is correct, they will work. However, if I had two filters that were compatible, I would sure have the tendency to pick the bigger one on the assumption (possibly incorrect) that it had more filter area.
The factory filters are made by Champion Laboratories the Motorcraft are made by Purolator. The engine plants get bulk filters that are specific to them for ease of assembly. The specs are the same filtration wise. You may also notice the factory filter is slightly hard to get off as others have found.
Personal opinion and others will feel differently but for me and my last 4 Ford pickups I only use Ford Motorcraft oil, filters, engine coolant, sparkplugs, etc. Over the years I've found this gives me the best service and least problems. Can't answer why but it works for me and the cost differences is negligible. Gook luck.

Other than the length everything else was pretty much the same.
