Hey y'all,
Before my birthday this december I'd like to swap out the stock 89 IFS on my truck for a solid front axle. I'm thinkin bout going for a dana 44 solid front. What year/model ford should I get this axle from? UNless a dana 60 would be better for the application, then what year/model truck should I find this from? What about the steering linkages? do I need to use mine or get the steering that's attached to the solid frt. Ax.? My truck has a 6 inch lift with a 3 inch body (6 inch blocks on rear). After I swapped out the solif front axle what should I do about the lift? Get new 6 inch blocks, or will the leaf spring kit that should be on there now cover it? it's a 3/4 ton so i'll need at least a 3/4 ton front axle. Is there anything I'm missing so far in this, like any extra items I'll need?
Try to get a dana 60 out of a 87-97 F350, it will be the easiest to swap in.
Do a search on here for this topic, there is alot of info out there on this.
If you can FIND a 86-98 F3504x4 parts truck, take the Dana 60, track-bar, track-bar mount, drag-link, tie rod, front driveshaft, and I think thats it. An F3504x4 parts truck is about as rare as hen's teeth.
also.... the frame is cracked by the front right tire. it has been patched once with a metal plate and a weld job that looks like a rookie had some practice..... about three or four inches toawards the front of the truck there is another small crack about 1 inch long runnign up the vertical side from the bottom.... I was told that I can drill a hole on both ends of the crack and then weld over it and then if I wanted weld a plate over it with two holes in it and then fill in the holes with weld too.... any suggestions? any reason why this second crack should not convince me to "scrap" the project, sell it and start new? is the frame, now with the second crack, prone to more cracks? the reason for the axle swap is beacuse the IFS is pulling away from the frame at the center where it bolts up, so it causes my tires to canter.... the tops poke inside the wheel well, and bottoms out..... any suggestions? is it still worth messing with? Thanks
