I have a 97 F350 Powerstroke, 90k miles, the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are hard and the light on the o/d blinks. I was told this is most likely a sensor. Any ideas from prior experience, or should I just bite the bullet and let the dealer figure it out.?? The stiff shift and blinking light happened together as far as I can tell. It drives and seems fine otherwise....
With all the problems people have had with incompetent Ford diesel techs, that is the last place I would go. A real good trans shop (not a national chain) will be able to diagnose it. A bad sensor does seem possible.
I am assuming the code does not reset when you turn the vehicle off and restart it. Find an auto parts store that will pull the code first. My truck occasionally does this, I have to disconnect the batteries (eliminate all power) and that will reset it. When the O/D light blinks the tranny goes into a safe mode and shifts hard. Once you get rid of the code it will shift normal again.
Thanks so much for all the help so far. I am new to this forum but appreciate the help.
I have seen from searching on this topic that it can be a simple sensor, a need for "service" overhaul or a new tranny. I will have to get some codes and go from there. The problem persists all the time. The temperature is still normal too (someone said it may be higher than normal temps). It shifts so hard under acceleration (around 2800 rpm) from 1st to 2nd that if it was not a crew cab it may even chirp the tires (no kidding) I'll get some codes and post them for some potential input. Thanks again....
It appears to be a speed sensor located in the rear differential. Mine has done it a couple of times in the last 50,000 miles. I could pull over and turn it off and back on and the 'puter resets.
I overheated my tranny once and it caused the symptoms you mention, even after the tranny was cooled. I had to disconecct power and allow the PCM to reset.
I got a code today on this.... P1728 trans slip error convertor clutch fault. The irony is that if we reset the code, it drives for 15-30 minutes then comes back. The other day I was driving and about 5 minutes into my trip the light went OUT and it shifted great. About 1/2 hour later, it came back. The fluid smells fine, it is clean and drives fine otherwise. This stuff kills me.
You are having the same problem, including codes, that I mentioned in my previous reply. Mine will do this a few times a year and once it throws the code it will continue to come back until I disconnect all power to reset the computer and do a tranny service even when the fluid looks and smells fine. Have you tried a tranny service yet? My opinion is that you and I have a tranny that is starting to go south. I think the code and converter slip is a result of poor line pressure, although I am not a mechanic, just know what works for my truck. Make sure if you do a service you drain the converter too.
I hat a ttrch (??) service done and complete flush and fill, disconnected the batteries and the code is gone. Crossing my fingers Thanks for alllll the help.
