Bed Crane

Anyone install a bed crane yet? What strucural reinforcement did you add underneath? Which brand / model did you go with and why?

I think i'd be inclined to go with one that mounts in your receiver and has support legs to the ground.. but I also don't have a daily need for one..

Thought about those... but it would probably be sitting cozy in my garage when I'm out and about and need it.

I have one on mine 2011. But from what I have seen with the aluminum beds and my expeierence with my current truck, I most likely will not be adding one to the next truck unless I can go directly to the frame.

Looked underneath last night and found that there are two bed cross members in approximately the right spot. Not sure if these are steel or aluminum, or if they are strong enough, but I may be able to make some reinforcement plate to attach to these cross members.

This brought back a great memory,
My dad used a little crane in the back of his truck to help him lift a 9.9 outboard off his aluminum boat.
Dad was one of those guys that didn't believed in, Don't tell me I can't do that. lol..

Im sure the pucks would be plenty strong... but then the crane would be in the middle of the bed...

So I finally installed one...
All plates are aluminum. I may go back and put a piece of u channel in place oid the plate that is on the existing bed support member, but lifted my 250 lb generator with only a little noticeable flex.

I used 1/2" plate, top and bottom and it still bent, and my plates are larger then yours.

I would suggest you do not leave the jack on all the time. In one season my jack was shot just from weather/rain and it costs $50 to replace.

Thanks for the advice. Was yours tired into one of the bed cross members? I have a tonneau cover that should protect it from the elements. I also made an upgrade for heavier items. I will add a tie strap when I need to lift something heavy - strap from bottom of bed to something lower. That should add plenty of support. The hook goes all the way through to the top of the plate.

I don’t get what you are doing with the eyebolt and strap.

When I get back to my laptop I’ll post a picture of my mounting plates and a pic of the pipe that is now slightly bent from use.

The corner closest to the left wheel well is under the most stress. The bolt that holds that corner is now am eye bolt that goes through the bed support channel and top distribution plate. By putting a strap in this eye bolt to pull down during a heavy load, it transfers some of the stress from the bed, to the eye bolt and strap. Other end of strap will hook to frame, axle, or whatever.

A nylon strap is not going to stop flexing like that. It will stretch. Chain maybe, if you can cinch it up.
