2017 Coolant Leak 6.7
#16
Well the dealer has officially said they can't find the coolant leak, they agree that it is loosing coolant somewhere but can't find it. They worked with engineers at Ford and did a bunch of tests but couldn't find anything. One thing I noticed that I didn't give much thought to before was in the valley of my motor it is rust colored up in front of the turbo, I wonder if I am getting coolant in the valley and because it is so close to the exhaust manifolds it is evaporating before it ever gets to the ground and I just smell it. Anyone have any thoughts where coolant could be leaking from in the primary loop and then end up in the valley? This seems common enough with many people having the same symptoms that hopefully someones dealer will eventually figure it out and be able to solve it for a lot of us.

If you get a chance grab a flashlight and try and see into the valley of your motor (it is kind of a pain in the butt and don't burn your face on the EGR piping ) and see if it is a rust colored, I am really curious. They gave me a loaner 2017 SD 6.7 with nearly the same build date as my truck so I am going to check that one out before I give it back, I also noticed it smelled like coolant when I parked it last night. I am starting to wonder just how many of these trucks this affects. My dad had a 2013 6.7 and it never lost an ounce of coolant over the few years he had it.

If they don't dye mark it, you will be chasing this until the source aggravates enough to be come apparent to even a blind man. I understand the techs not wanting your truck to become their life's work...being paid flat rate on the job and all, but for a lot of problems, testing won' produce a result. The static and dynamic conditions of the cooling system are entirely different. If, during the testing, there is no method to duplicate the dynamic conditions in the cooling system, then it may not show up. I feel for ya' but it will be resolved once it becomes bad enough.

I found my leak! At least a leak hopefully it’s the only one! Here are some pics showing the location, hopefully when I point it out to Ford they will just order the hose and fix it! It is leaking from the passenger side of the plastic tee and running down the side of the air intake tube and dripping onto the alternator.
