2011 f150 5.0. Recently changed my water pump and thermostat. Ever since changing, my cooling fans will run wide open as soon as the engine gets slightly warm, and never shut off until truck is turned off. No air in the system and the correct OEM thermostat is installed. No visible codes to my scan tool, also unhooked the battery to see if the computer might reset. but no luck. Any ideas??
I believe your truck only has a cylinder head temperature sensor, and your PCM infers coolant temperature from that reading. An air bubble would make sense, as that part of the head could heat up while the rest of your cooling system is flowing around the bubble.
I'd either find a scan tool that can read live data, or use something like a Bluetooth ELM327 reader to check your coolant temperatures. We're shooting in the dark without seeing what the PCM sees.
Sorry for late update but have been working a lot. I took it to someone with a good scan tool but the only I've data I shows is for the cylinder head temperature which was 215°. I decided I would put another thermostat in just to see what happens when I did. So, after I finished the install I filled the tank and started the truck to get fluid cycling. Ran for about 30 minutes and coolant never moved then all of a sudden temp hand jumped and displayed engine over temp mesage. Turned truck off vented the tank but coolant level never went down.
Sounds like you vapor locked the system. I've always been told to run the engine before filling the tank to avoid that.
Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the radiator to vent the system, if the tank doesn't start draining fill the radiator with a funnel, reconnect the hose, and start the engine.
