there is this punk in my town with a 96 Z71 and he brags about his truck left and right about it's "power". I have a 1990 ford with a 460 manual and a REALLY LOW granny gear.. here is my delimma: I am going (hoping) to shut him up with a pull off.. i don't have 4x4, and he says that his 4 low will be enough to out-do my 460 in granny gear.. any comments?
That 4x4 low is really low. In my truck in 4lo and first gear, I redline at like 5mph, I have a 4.9 5spd and with it in low, when I start out in 3rd it feels about the same as 1st in 2hi.
So it would be kind of like you starting in 2nd or 3rd and him in first (both in 2wd).
When it comes to pulling gearing is everything. (well tourque helps too)
that is true
I can put mine in 4-lo and 1st and let it idle, and I can walk faster than the truck is rolling(done it before). But man alive the torque it has is incredible.
also he will have 4 wheels pulling verses your 2 (better traction)
Pull-offs are a good way to break things. That being said, pull-offs are also mainly a test of traction, which he will have a lot more of than you because it is a 4x4 unless you put a lot of weight in the bed (until you have more weight on your rear tires than he has on all 4).
I agree with busdriver, a pull-off is just asking for something to break. However, if you still have to do it, it's more of who has the most traction, not the most power. One technique I've heard of is to stand on the brakes till he breaks loose with his tires, then pull. You'll have more traction since your tires aren't spinning. This may be harder to do since he has 4x4.
I hooked up my truck one time... I have '95 F150 4x4 4.9 with a 5-speed adn 31x10:50 regular tread tires. I hooked up to a '97 dodge 1500 4x4 with a 5.9 (360) automatic with 33" mud tires. Well, he smoked me. Part of the reason I think is he got the jump on me. That little 1/2 second to let the clutch out got me. I had my left foot half down on the clutch and my right sideways holding the brake and heel on the gas. I'm not making any excuses(I really didn't expect to win) but that is something to think about. The guy with the dodge is my roommate at school, and he is supposed to hook up to a Z71 this weekend....I'll let yall know how it works out.
