For those who have a transmission temperature gauge installed What kind of readings are you getting?
I just installed a Hayden cooler inline with the radiator cooler and I'm getting temps around 170-180 during highway runs (not towing). Before the cooler install the gauge would read 220-230 under similar conditions. I'm thinking about bypassing the radiator cooler completly. Can these trannys run too cold? Any opinions on this welcome.
Depending where you live the tranny can run too cool. The tranny has a temperature range it likes to run in. Until it reaches that temp you may not get the best performance or mileage.
all3 of my current vehicles all shift at higher RPM for about 3 miles or so until they warm up. This is during summer months. I would guess if there were no heat from the water radiator and if the temperatures were freezing, the tranny would take much longer to warm up than necessary. I am guessing the shift point is computer controlled and based upon temperatures as well as other things.
A tranny shop also told me not to over cool a tranny. He did not recommend huge coolers unless needed and to keep the radiator cooler in line.
