Stupid rwd vehicle. I feel like I'm down by nearly half as many drive wheels as you 4wd guys.
1st came the mistake of selling my 05 4x4 EB that I had taken so good care of and bought... a chevy... suburban. I KNOW I KNOW, it was a stressful year. Tons of kids, hecticness of not know about my job and don't get me started on the nearly 5$ per gallon diesel.
Time went on, and the more I thought about it the more I missed it. The more I hated that stupid 5.3 gutless ride. The more I wanted my diesel back.
I made a rash decision and picked up a 03 7.3 Limited 2wd and started "fixing" thing. Now I got it 1/2 way fixed up and all I can think about is "its still just rwd". It'll never be what I want it to be.
The real problem is its causing me to lose motivation to fix the rest of the stuff that it needs and I don't want to put any more money into it. Oh, then there is the fact that I can't sell it the way it is because now the wife likes it. So I guess my real issue is convincing the wife we need another one.
It all depends where you live. If you never get ice and snow and don't go off roading then a 2wd will be fine. Or..... you can stop putting money into it and sell it then get a 4WD. I always regretted selling my 1st Excursion.... so I bought another within a year..... both 4WD
I really miss my 99 Durango. Got rid of it for more leg room and better pulling power, but it sure was comfortable! Only downside to that rig was that it was 2wd. I couldn't pull an EMPTY flatbed trailer out of my own yard with only 2in of snow on the grass. Airing down the new ATs did nothing! After 2hrs of spinning tires and digging trenches, I finally got that trailer out. Had similar issues on the boat ramp, too. After my daughter cooked a head gasket, I decided we needed something bigger.....hence the reason I'm on this forum now. I will never buy another 2wd SUV/truck again.
Many roads in this region are, mandatory, carry tire chain roads even if someone has a 4x4.
I drive one regularly.
But I carry my pickup chains year round anyway. I feel like something is wrong if they are not with me.
All company pickup trucks carry chains.
I run good winter tires.
When mud or snow gets too bad the chains get put on.
But I live where the roads are notoriously bad.
So for me chains just are just a way of life.
I don't miss 4WD. My prior Ex had it, and I likely used it a total of three times over 100k miles.
What I do miss is a limited slip diff. Without that the thing spins its wheels...sorry, wheel... if I spit on the ground. There's an Eaton Detroit Truetrac diff in this truck's very near future.
I converted my 4X4 EX into RWD, at least for the time being.......
I bought new complete front and rear axles with the 4.88 gears I wanted but so far I have only swapped the rear axle over, so no 4X4 for me until I get around to doing the matching front. No problems so far and the rear has a locker if I get into a slippery spot.
Tom, you need me to come over and install that for you while I am in PA in May? Good grief! Whatcha waitin' for?
I can bring my furniture dollies if you need them...
Lol, I'm just that lazy....
In May we will be in TN, KY and MO, so you will have to come back later!
You have a daughter living up here, right? Where in PA will you be?
