Hello All,
I've noticed in the last month or so that when I accellerate lightly or normally I hear this pinging/tapping noise(almost sounds like something is rattling). I do have a broken stud off of passenger side manifold. Any ideas?
Also, regarding manifold with broken stud, will not repairing this do serious damage?
I'm a dealer technician and we see this ALOT. I'ts referred to as "spark knock". It's caused by the engine running lean (not enough fuel for the amount of air inducted). The most common problem is MAF (Mass air flow sensor) contamination or failure. I'm not going to guarantee that's the problem but it is a very common one, especially at high mileage. Have you changed your fuel filter lately? Cleaned the injectors? A clogged fuel filter or restricted injectors can cause a lean condition. I'd give that a shot first, but you'll need a special fuel line tool to release the internal clips on the line. If you're not sure how to use it, I'd advise going to your local dealer to replace it because if you damage to internal clips on the lines you'll have to replace the lines as well. If the fuel filter doesn't help, have a dealer take a look at it and I'd recommend having the injectors cleaned while you're there. Hope I helped.......
I did change the fuel filter roughly a month ago. Could it be the filter? It's not a Motorcraft brand. Had a fuel induction done earlier in the summer.
Fix that manifold stud. It may be leaking. Under load, the ticking will get louder when you have a manifold leak. Don't diagnose around on another system, if you have another one with a known problem.
The brand of fuel filter should not be a problem. While quality may vary, they all will let enough fuel through, especially after a month of service life!
