I'm in the market for a new Ford pickup. I could also be buying a large fifth-wheel toy hauler (between 39 and 43 feet). At what range of weight and/or length should I be moving from a SRW to DRW? Thanks.
Go with the DRW advice, while the ~20k pound tow rating of a 350 srw will probably cover most 40ish ft trailers you'll be safer and so will everyone else on the road if you get a dually.
There is no length that requires a DRW. It's all about pin weight and the old 20% of GVWR rule is often off. I have a 44.5' long, 8.5' wide, 21k GVWR (less when fully loaded ready for travel) toy hauler that in about at or just under my ratings. If you want to stay with a SRW, you can still have a large 5ver. You just need to shop pin weights to find one that works. Light pin (due to axle placement) is one of the reasons I started shopping my brand as I had no desire to buy a DRW...
I have a f350 srw and was once looking at toyhaulers. Only a few would fit the bill on my truck's limits. That was going by the manufacturer's "empty' pin weight. You can find some but the triaxle types are pretty much overweight.
