I just looked at an '82 F100. I thought I saw a 3.8 V6. Now after looking here to find out more about this, I don't see anything about this motor. Did I see it/ remember it wrong? (If not, what's the good and bad about this motor with an auto (C6?)
The 3.8 V6 was the base F100 engine in 82-83, and, the automatic it was hooked to was the C5(basicly a C4 with lockup connverter.) It's hugely underpowered for the truck, and, generally not the best engineout there...

Evan 'bout said it all. Even the newest 3.8 isn't a great motor ... but there are people who will argue about anything.
Ford had another wierd engine in this era, a 255 cid V8. A neighbor went a little nuts trying to find information, let alone parts. Ended up with a 302 in his 1980-81.
Unless you collect oddball stuff I think I'd either pass or plan on repowering it ... a lot depends on the condition of the truck.
