I have a 69 4x4 with a 390 in it. I like it, enjoy the sound of that dual exhaust purring behind me, but.... I have in the past owned a 70 F100 with a 300-i6 in it that had massive power.
Here is my dilemna, which I brought upon myself. If I take out that 390 and drop a 300-i6 in there, my gas mileage goes up and I still have a motor with power.
The question is the transmission. Will that transmission in there now (no I do not know what type it is) match up to a 300-i6? I reckon if not, my decision is made. Since this beast is a 4x4, I don't want to mess with the transmission. Let me know some thoughts on it.
Thanks

Well you have a 390, big block. You want a 300 I-6 in there, small block patern. Dont forget about engine mounts. So no it wont be a one day in/out job. If its gas mileage you want get a little Courier and put the 300 I-6 in it. Lots of fun!
Yeah I reckon. Didn't think about that. I wouldn't own a courier though. Bad experience with one of those back in 1986. Besides, 1969 F100 4x4... that is my dream come true. I love those things. Would have 'em all if I could afford to. There is just something about them. Probably has alot to do with Daddy and Granddaddy both being Ford men. Don't know that I respect anyone more than those two fellars and my Father-in-Law. 3 best men I know. Set high moral standards, give you the shirt off their back and whoop you when you deserve it.
But I will definitely stay with the 69. I have a vision for this truck and hopefully one day my boys will be driving it (which ain't that far off really).
Hoo-ah!

I don't think you would see much of a mileage improvement using the 300 in the same rig as a 390. It seems to be more about weight and gearing in my opinion.
I'd spend the money/time on taller tires or a hot ignition setup or free flowing exhaust. Then, keep your foot out of it :-)
I have changed the other way, from a 300 to a 390 and used the same frame mounts and just moved them. Usually the holes are already in the frame. Any swap of this nature will turn into a frusterating scavenger hunt if you don't have access to the complete donor vehicle.
You will only gain a couple miles to the gallon but you also have the advantage of 20 more years of technology with the 300 and could even swap in a factory EFI at some point if you wanted.
I just finished a swap of a 240-6 for a 360 in my 1969 F-100. The 240/300 has a different bell housing but the tranmission ( T-18) mounted up to the 360 housing just fine. I had to move the pearches for the motor mounts to the rear position and the transmission cross member to the foward postion. The only problem I had was the clutch bell crank did not have a mount on the 360 bell housing and I had to cut the mount off the 240 housing and weld it to the 360.
Several years ago I replaced the old "three on the tree" with the T-18. At that time I had to move the crossmember to the rear to accomodate the four speed. When I did the 240 to 360 swap I assume that the shorter V8 block required that the member move back foward to make up for the size. As someone pointed out, all of the holes were already drilled in the frame rails and foward cross member to accomodate all of this moving around.
Moving the crossmember to accomodate different trannys I can understand, but if the tranny is not going to be changed you shouldn't have to move it anywhere.
I think I'll just keep the 390 in this one. I will find me another 69 to do the 300 in. I do like that 300. Thinking about getting one and fixing it up for my Dad. He would love that. Thanks for the information gentlemen. I do appreciate this forum.
