Getting more mod ideas......

Well I can never leave well enough alone. As you all know once you start doing things to these trucks you just can’t quit. So anyway, I’m thinking about possibly installing a push button start in my truck. I know there isn’t a need for it and no practical reason, but hey that’s how I operate. So I’m thinking I will need 2 switches, one to turn on my accessory switch and a momentary for the starter. The starter will be simple enough I believe, just remove the small wire from the starter and run a new wire to the momentary switch. Then run a fused hot wire to the other side of the button. Push the button and BAM the truck spins over. Now for the accessory button, I am not sure how I’ll do that because I don’t know which wires I need. I know I need the hot coming in and the other wire that makes the full circuit when you turn the key, obviously. Anyone know which wires I need?

If you find a wiring diagram for a remote starter, it will tell you which wires to tap into near the key switch. Those should be all you need.

That’s easier said than done it seems. I’ve been searching for a couple days now and everything that comes up is for the 7.3. Not sure why exactly I can’t find anything on it.

Can someone just dumb this down for me? When I turn my key to the run position, all the accessories come on. If I want do all that with my own switch, what wires do I need in and out?

Ok so here’s what I am thinking. When the key is turned to run, A1, A3, A4 and L1 all become powered. So I should just be able to run power to those 4 wires and when I flip the toggle switch they should all come on right? I feel like I’m on the right track here just a few questions I have. This would fire the glow plugs correct? And how many amps do these 4 wires carry? I want to make sure I get a big enough switch. I don’t have an ammeter so I can’t check them.

Well I went ahead and wired it all up and it works like a charm. Flip the toggle and everything comes on. After the wait to start light goes off I push a button and it fires right up. The only issue now is how to get the steering wheel unlocked without the key in the ignition.

Have you tried starting it without the key in the ignition yet? I’m wondering if the PATS will keep it from starting or if you’ve bypassed that.

As far as the steering lock should be pretty easy to disable. May have to drill a bit, though

It fires up no problem without the key. Everything works but I can’t turn the wheel because it locks. I figured I could take the ignition cylinder out and modify it but I’m not sure which piece to modify.

Ok, help me understand this. You can start it without the key in it. But, if you put the key in the ignition. Turn the key to the on position. The steering wheel won't unlock?

I believe the situation is he is trying to not need the key at all. In other words, he wants to disable the steering lock so he doesn’t have to have the key in the ignition.

Do you have any plan for theft protection once you take away key use? Or is this a drag/mud truck that is always kept locked in your shop? If it's insured for theft, your insurance might give you a hard time about a truck that has its key ignition system bypassed.

Besides the lack of key I’m concerned with how easily the PATS system was bypassed...I thought the truck was supposed to not start unless the PCM received the proper authentication from the chip in the key, but I guess the trucks are pretty easy to hotwire...

It's my understanding that most, if not all, of the pickup 6.0s do not have a chip key system. It may have been available in the Excursions or vans, I don't know.
