initial timing

I have been working on a project that is about finished except for the timing. The 88 351w engine idles as under a load at the recommended 10 BTDC and idles much more freely at 18 BTDC. By removing the#1 plug I determined that I am at the right gear for the distributor. This is a points type distributor however, and I am not sure if this is a problem in relation to the cam. Can I run this or greater advance safely? Would it be possible to run without the vacuum advance so as to avoid overheating? Thank you.

may first gues just on what you've said is maybe you ballancer ring has slipped, you could try removeing the #1 plug get the piston to the top on TDC then mark your balancer at the timming tab pointer, and use this as a refrence point for setting your timming, if you set your base timming 1/2 to 3/4 inch befroe this mark it should put you in the ball park. hope this helps. Currently the pointer does point to 0 on the balancer when the piston is at TDC. I will check it again because I may have missed some damage. Thanks.
