Twin plugs?!?
A friend has a 97' Ranger 4cyl. with a CEL.
I checked both O2 sensors and they are good.
We remover the plugs and they are a bit worn. On the number 3 cylinder, the passenger side plug looked like it was not firing and the drivers side plug looked like it had seen some heat.
With this twin plug system (to help with detonation I assume) do both of the plugs always fire, or only when the engine detects detonation.
I hooked up the timing light to number 3 on the passenger side and there was no spark.
Anyone have any insight into this strange ignition system?
Any good articles I can read.
Thanks for your help, Dave
As far as the spark plugs, that's a lifelong discussion around here, and if you want to read about it, feel free to search for it, and you'll find enough info to read till ya go blind..
what i had been told was that the second set of plugs fire on the exhaust stroke .
one problem i had was an intermittent stalling that would happen when making sharp curves, took it to ford and they couldn't find any problem.it kept occuring and finally the mechanic was in the truck and it happened.found out it was the second coil pack had a crack in it and it would not fire ,replaced it and did not ever have that problem again.
before changing such an expensive part i would have a shop do a complete engine analyzing done ,the money you spend for that can save a lot of heartache when trying to diagnose a problem.
that truck had 184000 on it when traded for the one i have now.
love my ranger..
