Ok i have had some slight engine problems with my 88 FI 300 lately, The engine was running fine about 1 month ago, when it just stopped while idling, and wouldn't start back up.. just coughed like only firing on 1 or 2 cylinders. I thoguht it was electrical so i have replaced the plugs, plug wires, distributor (cap rotor and dist assmbly) and the modual that attaches to the dist.
the darn thing would just do the same things... so i decided to try a new idea... i pured Gasoline into each cylinder, and replaced all the plugs... and Voila it fired up.. kind of... it ran for about 10 seconds, and i could hit the Gas peddle and it would rev fairly well... then out of the blue, the engine just stopped...
Could this be a problem with the injectors or am i missing an electronic modual somewhere down the line.. Cause the Fuel filter is fine, the Spark IS VERY STRONG! i can't figure out what the heck is going on...
Sounds like a fuel pump problem. When you turn the key to run can you hear the pump(s) running? Some years have low pressure pumps in the tanks and a highpressure pump on the frame rail. Does it do this on both tanks?
I dont know what it is but if you find the problem please post it I am having the same problem and all the pumps seem to be fine I am getting pressure to the fuel rails don't know how much though
In my experience, just because a fuel pump seems to be spraying tons of fuel doesn't mean it is operating correctly, or that it is putting out enough pressure to even make the vehicle run at all. You could have the thing pressure tested by a mechanic, but fuel pumps are rather cheap, and wear out all the time, so I would still recommend you just replace it.
I went and bought a pressure guage and hooked it to the schrader valve at the back of the fuel rail and have 45-55 lbs of pressure but when I pour gas down throttle body it runs great until the gas burns off
Are you getting any engine codes (check engine light)? I had a very similar problem with an 88 f-150. The engine would sputter just on the verge of stalling. When I checked the trouble codes it indicated a fuel pump relay problem. These control the fuel pump. If you dont know what these are, they are found right behinde the air filter and are about 1 inch square with 4 to 6 wires coming out of them. When I checked mine, one of the wires had corroded off and was making sporadic contact giving me the rough idle. When I repaired the contact, the problem was fine. Make sure you have a good manual. They always help. Hope this helps, let me know
