Hello everyone. I'm new to this section, usually hang out in the diesel section. I have a chance to buy an '86 ford half ton. They are saying it has a 5.0 fuel injected motor. Does this sound right? I've never heard of such. It has a new transmission. Body is not perfect and it runs, just not great. Does $1,500 sound like a fair deal. Looking to start a project with my son.
Thanks for any input.
A brand new AOD transmission runs $1,500 easy, so the rest of the truck is definitely worth the parts price, worst case scenario. One note of caution: check that the TV rod/cable is correctly adjusted; that will kill any AOD in short order.
The 302 with EFI was optional in 85 (computer carb standard), then made standard in 86. You can buy an OBDI code reader, or do a site search on how to read codes with a paper clip to try and figure out what's wrong with it before you buy it.
It sounds like a great father-son project good luck!
I will warn you, the early efi is a little oddball. And the Ford EECIV can be difficult to troubleshoot sometimes. There is no way to get streaming data on the fly with a ordinary scanner that you can afford. There are some excellent aftermarket books on these systems, and the mustang crowd can be a help, though like I said the early truck systems can be a little different here and there.
Beneath it all is a ordinary 302 engine, so you have many options if you run into trouble with it.
