95 aerostar shift problem
I am a servce member currently serving in Iraq. My wife is in germany with our 95 Aerostar. For no particular reason she can no longer shift out of park. The first one or two times it was tough, but once out of park it would go through the gears easily. I do not have access to my aerostar book and am not well versed on the interlock with the park position. I am looking for any input to try and guide my wife in the right direction so that no one trys to pull a fast one. We have a quality German service shop but they are not too familiar with the Aerostar.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. An e to mark.w.kromer@us.army.mil would be the easiest way to reach me as i only get short periods of time on the internet.
Thank You for any help,
Sincerely,
Mark
It could be possibly a plastic bushing worn out on the shift tube or other mechanical malfunction in that mechanism. I just replaced that on mine. There's a little catch on the back of the shift tube that locks the shift mechanism and it might be out of alignment. or...
There's a solenoid (I think I recall that) that deactivates that catch. Could very likely be a bad solenoid or shorted electrical connection to it. I'd check that first before having someone dropping the steering column to see the mechanism. It's not that tough of a job but kinda time consuming.
And if you're like me and short on cash for the time being... If you do manage to get it outta park then you could also just put it in neutral when you turn it off. Can't get the key out, though.(put the e-brake on) It'll start in neutral. Don't put it back in park until you get the prob fixed.

The book doesn't go to into detail on automatics but looking at it could be the linkage needs adjustment .......... is it auto or manual ????
