Sounds like vac pump to me! It will die soon at a bad time, order a fresh one tonight. A cheap puller/installer from Harbor Freight works fine to R&R the pulley.
I THINK the $130 Alliant Power one is the same as OEs. I saw it on a few different vendor sites. Rockauto has Motorcraft for about $165.
Consider replacement of the idlers and tensioner when it is all open.
Yeah I just can’t tell. I have had the belt off and spun the vac and the power steering. Neither one sounds funny spinning by hand. I replaced the tensioner not too long ago and all the idlers are in good shape.
Are there any other ways to test to see which one is bad?
will the power steering pump be more of a whine when it starts to go vs the screech like the vac pump?
Mine sounded just like that before its assend blew out on me on I10 when I was out of town. Lost vacuum but pulley still spun somehow and did not toss my belt. Limped it to the parking garage with no power brakes and got to fix it out of town. I have that F6TZ one on my 10/95 build truck. Paid $270 plus tax at local dealer. :/
When I have had crappy CII pumps, they typically just whine. You I am sure have heard that on half ton F150s, Mustangs, etc. Not saying it cannot make that noise, but I started with both idlers and tensioner with pulley before working to the vac pump. I should have done all when radiator was out.
Put the bolts in the holes before you put the pully on the assy.
I usually put the pully on while its in the truck.
The power steering pump will usually cause belt squeel. The vac pump causes the sound you said. I usually have to replace mine once a year, but i've made it 2 years this time. kinda scared now.
I would strongly suggest vaccum pump be bought with pulley installed. Much better than dealing with pulley and can easily be replaced on the side of the road. Not much price difference at all.
I never saw a vac pump come with the pulley on. Are the bolts provided and installed?
I've never seen one with a pully installed either.
It's a presson pully.
Bolts are re-used. You just cannot get the bolts in the holes with the pully installed on the shaft.
I bolt the pump on the motor then use my puller modified to press as the end of the pump is threaded, so stack of washers and a wrench and i push it down on to the pump.
Some aftermarket pumps can be had with the pulley installed and the bolts captive behind it. If the intent is an easier on-road fix, then I would suggest also having a 10mm (?) GearWrench (ratcheting box wrench). Running those captive bolts in/out with a plain box or open-end wrench is.... slow.
If you want to go OEM, and swap the pulley with the pump in-frame, the Harbor Freight power steering pulley tool juuuuuuust fits behind the fan shroud.
