I replaced the distributor cap, rotor and wires on my 1994 F150 (5.0 L) today. It starts and idles great - but when I drive it there seems to be a hesitation when I change gears (but I'm not sure about that). When I rev it up while not in gear - I can hear a "pop" sound. I investigated and found that the air inlet beside the radiator top seems to be having air forced back out of it when I rev it up.
I don't think I installed the wires wrong because it idles and runs very smooth. Is there something I've missed here?
It sounds like crossfire but it is not likely with new wires. Check out the order you have them in your cap with the firing order, it sounds like you have two of them in the wrong holes.
Thanks for the replies guys - a mixed up firing order is most likely the problem. I am looking at my Haynes repair manual and it shows the firing order on the distributor cap and block.
I guess I just match up each # on the cap to the correct # on the block ie - #1 on dist cap goes to #1 on the block, #2 to #2 etc
Let me know if I'm on the right track - I'm a truck and trailer mechanic and NEVER work on cars lol
