Fan blade shroud position

Working on my truck recently, it suddenly occurred to me the fan blades don't go very far into the shroud. I really didn't think much of it because that's the way it came from Detroit. I just know that I have to be extra careful tinkering around the front of the engine when it's running because the blades are mostly exposed and close to the pump. Anything dangling will get me a scare from the loud ting of the blades hitting it.

So, I decided to do some searching today while awaiting my fate from the government furlough. The Flex-a-lite website says that the bladed should be halfway into the shroud for maximum efficiency. That would require about a 1" spacer for me.

Anyone in a similar situation?

Yea, the fan should be at least half in the shroud. There are different length spacers that go between the fan and pulley. Just have to find the right one. I’ve seen them up to 4 inches before.

Looks fine to me. I wouldn't touch it unless you're getting cooling problems.
