might as well add my 20 gallons... give some thought to your front suspension...
I'm doing a 460 in a 53. there is plenty of room with a MII suspension... take care with a Volare clip and headers... it gets a little tight.. hence my article on removing a Volare and replacing with a MII unit..
as for gears, I'm running 3.00 posi unit... sadly it isn't on the road yet but calculates as follows
Consider a 70's 460 LTD as a complete donor if you are away from the rot belt. The front clip can be adapted, you get the front discs and HD suspension along with steering and no motor mount problems.
Im still anti M11 in a truck and a heavy motor just increases that feeling.
If you want to keep the F100 frame uncut then consider the Dakota swap; those are popular and a crossmember is available thru "http://www.industrialchassisinc.com"
A real truck wants a real suspension.
A friend has a 460 in his 55 and had to go with 2.75 gears in order to get traction. It tows a boat on the interstates or up windy mountain road just fine with a bed full of gear.
Bill,
you won't have to worry about space limitations under your hood. There is enough room left over under my hood,I was thinking about adding a 302.Ya know, like boats use trolling motors?
Then I could go trolling for chickens up in Iowa.I hear they love them 302's up there.
Yeesh Purple55 with these last posts of yours uping 'fenders when ever you can. Not that I care but you may be asking for it....You may find a german potato shoved up your tailpipe by a wellknown Iowa guy.
I'm kind of hesitant of using a Dakota after a ride in one this summer. At my summer job they had an '86 outfitted with a tool box and a small air compresser that they used to change tires with. Well on the highway it would, not always though, do this swaying thing that's like...well it acts like the front end is about to fly off the ground like it's an airplane without wings or something. It felt like you were in the rodeo. Quit some fun until you realize that your in a vehicle travling at high speeds.
They messed with it all summer trying to figure out what was wrong. I figured it was the few hundred pounds extra pounds of weight, but then again it is a truck. The sway bar was checked, but no go. I think in the end it was that the tires were too big or something.
Thank you for all the good advice. I want to stick with the straight axle with my 460. I like the way they look, they are strong and I'm not looking for a Cadillac ride. I was going to put mono leafs up front but I'm not reading much good about them on F.T.E. What do you think? BILL
My friend Steve does not care for the mono leaf on the front of his 56. So I would suggest trying the straight axle and see how you like it. If all the front end parts are in good mechanical condition you should be fine. Good Luck, John
